Emphasis on Learning

  Back to Correlates of Effectiveness

This factor indicates that the schools' main priority is the learning of students. Distractions and interruptions of instruction and learning are minimized when this correlate is met at the 2.0 level.

An analysis of the perception data for the EMPHASIS ON LEARNING correlate indicates that the 2.0 level is met by all three groups. The values given to the correlate are: Parents: 1.875 Teachers: 1.759 Administrators: 1.500

Observations:

There is strong agreement that the district is most effective in recognizing student achievements (element A), focusing on student learning (element D), and providing support for teachers who are improving their skills (element E). The groups also agree, on the other hand, that the district needs to give attention to areas related to providing adequate access to computers (element N), classroom interruptions (element F) and instructional support in the classroom (element L). The data indicate that in order to maintain the strong focus on student learning and effective teaching, district leaders need to ensure access to technology for all students and address concerns about the classroom learning environment.

Overall Patterns:

All three groups perceive element N not to be established in the district:
N: The district provides students with computers at school and makes special arrangements for children who do not have computers at home.

Parents further identify element F not to be established, and teachers’ perceptions are slightly above the 2.0 level on the same element:
F: There are few interruptions in the classroom.

Teachers’ scores are slightly above 2.0 on one additional element:
L: Instructional aides help out in the classroom.

Areas of Greatest Effectiveness:

Parents and teachers agree elements A and D are among the most effective elements of Emphasis on Learning in the district:
A: Students are praised and rewarded for their achievements.
D: Teaching and other school activities focus on student performance, responsibility and skills.

Teachers and administrators agree that element E is among the most effective elements in the district:
E: The school supports activities that help teachers improve their skills.

Areas of Greatest Concern:

All three groups agree elements F and N are among the least effective elements of Emphasis on Learning in the district:
N: The district provides students with computers at school and makes special arrangements for children who do not have computers at home.
F: There are few interruptions in the classroom.

Teachers and administrators agree element L is among the least effective in the district:
L: Instructional aides help out in the classroom.
