The School District of Clayton:
A Profile
The School District of Clayton's goal is to recognize individual differences and to provide each child with a positive and complete educational experience. To achieve this goal, Clayton maintains a pupil teacher ratio of about 20:1 average at the elementary level, 22:1 at the middle school level, and 17:1 at Clayton High School, and stresses individualized instruction at each grade level. The certificated teachers and administrators of the District total 252.
Most classroom teachers have 10 or more years experience and hold master's degrees. Their work is complemented by resource teachers, interns, clerks, and general education staff members. Each school has a library exceeding national standards and a full time librarian. Each school has at least one counselor, and basic instruction is augmented by regular instruction in art, music, physical education, and computers.
Clayton students excel academically. At CHS, advanced placement courses are available. Typically, 95% of our graduates go on to two and four year colleges. Last year the average SAT verbal score was 591, and average SAT math score was 590. The average ACT composite score during the same time period was 24.8.
Every year a large number of students are recognized as National Merit and Commended Scholars. Our students, K-12, compare favorably in ability and achievement with students from independent schools and select suburban districts nationally, including the eastern seaboard and the west coast.
The School District offers a full range of extracurricular activities and special programs. Before and after school care is available in each of our elementary schools. Activity programs, intramural sports, and city-sponsored athletic leagues provide other afternoon, evening, and weekend options. An eight-week, K-8 summer recreation program is offered every summer for patron students. Creative summer institutes and the high school summer program offer additonal challenges.
Since 1981, the District has participated in a student voluntary transfer desegregation program with the City of St. Louis.
