HAMPTON TOWNSHIP is a friendly, suburban residential community located 12 miles north of Pittsburgh with convenient access to downtown Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. There are approximately 18,000 residents from predominantly middle-and upper-middle class families.
PPG Industries is the major industry partnering with the school in a variety of educational endeavors.
The School District and Township share the same boundaries, encompassing slightly more than 16 square miles. The Hampton Township Parks and Recreation Department maintains a community park and pool.
They share a full range of recreational facilities with the school district. North Park is located nearby as is Hartwood Acres, the Red Barn Theater, Community College of Allegheny County, and LaRoche College.
Hampton is convenient to other advantages associated with a large metropolitan area.
The Hampton Township School District consists of five (5) school buildings with programs and services designed to meet the needs of all students.
Three of the five schools have earned National Blue Ribbon status in recent years. Hampton has also been recognized twice by The PA Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, for implementing best practices for inclusive education in the regular education classroom. Hampton's Mission Statement is "To educate individuals by creating partnerships among staff, parents and community and provide a positive atmosphere in which students become lifelong learners and people of character who can achieve high expectations." The District's Elementary, Middle School and High School academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and social experiences fulfill that pledge.
The Hampton Township School District offers a broad range of courses, programs and services that extend on a continuum from support for students having difficulty to acceleration for those who achieve at a superior level.
As a whole, Hampton students are high achievers. They consistently score well above the state average on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), and they are ranked within the top 1% of schools in Pennsylvania. Additionally they earn an impressive number of National Merit semi-finalist and finalist awards each year. A majority of Hampton students score above the seventy-fifth (75th) percentile on norm-referenced exams. Further, the District was recently ranked as one of the top High Schools in the country according to the Jay Mathews Challenge index.
Hampton offers many rigorous honors courses as well as advanced placement courses. Its graduation rate is approximately ninety-eight (98) percent. Students attend colleges and universities such as Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell, Penn State, Notre Dame, Dartmouth, Carnegie Mellon, Lafayette and Bucknell as well as other local institutions of higher learning. The breadth and depth of the curriculum ensures that students are prepared in the academic and practical skills necessary to continue a formal, academic or technical program. Ninety-five (95) percent of Hampton graduates pursue an education beyond high school.
Band, Orchestra, Fine and Performing Arts are also integral parts of Hampton's curriculum. Likewise, Hampton supports a full array of boys and girls interscholastic athletics and club sports including crew, and lacrosse.
Approximately eighty-five (85) percent of Hampton High School graduates participate in one or more extra-curricular activities during their high school career. About one-third participate in interscholastic athletic competition.
The District's 2007-2008 budget is $39 million. Local revenues contribute approximately seventy-six (76) percent of the budget with real estate millage at 20.53 mills.
